Build a Bundle (#6); Fat Quarter Shop

Last week's winning bundle is nice.

I am going to limit myself from now on as I do not really have the time to be creating bundles. I need to get cracking and finish packing! I am almost done with the packing business. Thank God!

And, to be honest, I am getting discouraged. I do not know what they are looking for. What are the criterion? I have no idea and I believe that is my stumbling block. I must remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What looks wonderful to one person may look horrid to another. I just wish I can see the fabrics in person because a sometimes a thumbnail just is not enough.

Below are four bundles that I have come up with. The first fabric is the staff pick of the week and it is part of the "Ahoy Matey" line of fabrics by Michael Miller. I really loved the middle fabric I found; so, I stuck with that particular one. I then picked a variety of third fabrics that could potentially work with the first two. As with previous Build a Bundle posts, you can click on the images to see a bigger image.

Build a Bundle (#5); Fat Quarter Shop

The last week's winning bundle is beautiful!
There is no limit to the amount of bundles you can create so go crazy and be creative!
Needless to say, I went kind of crazy. I was not feeling too hot due to a headache and waking up with a hot flash that seemed to last forever. A facebook friend said "That wasn't a hot flash, but an energy surge." Sad, but true.

Anyway, when I read the above quote, I zoned out so much 'working' yesterday morning that my stomach woke me up. It was almost 1:00pm! I had to break for lunch! I then went right back to 'work'.

The below are the bundles I came up with. I am afraid that I got carried away playing around with complementary colors in the end. It is the year of the orange (Tangerine) after all. Gah! By the way, the blue/green Batik with "diamonds" is the designer's fabric choice. You can click on each image and it will take you to a bigger image in the Flickr album.

Build a Bundle(#4); Fat Quarter Shop

The last week's winning bundle. It's tough! I don't know how they can choose because many of the entries are mighty close.

Below is my entry. I threw this together again as I'm mighty busy.
My creation
1. TwoByTwo-7739-77-450, 2. HyperrealGarden-HG-7409-450, 3. Hearstrings-22284-DKBRO1-450

The "pink" goes with the flamingos in the main fabric. I thought it was interesting.

Build a Bundle (#3) with Fat Quarter Shop

The last week's winning bundle was lovely!

Below is my bundle for this week's challenge. I just kind of threw it together as I am feeling really tired from being sick from a migraine in the night. I like it; but, I have a feeling it will only appeal to the few (including me).

Build a Bundle with the Fat Quarter Shop

DesiSmileys.com
Heads up people!

I interrupt my blogging break AGAIN. I know that there are some of you who would love to hear about this latest and greatest adventure (contest). I just had to pass the news onto y'all.

Fat Quarter Shop is have its first Build a Bundle contest. You select two fabrics to coordinate with the Fat Quarter Shop Staffer of the week’s pick. This post tells you all about how to create a mosaic bundle. Go check it out. It is easy peasy!

At the end of the contest, the FQS staffer will pick the winning bundle. The winner will receive “ONE YARD of each fabric in their winning combination”. How cool is that?!?

Personally, I love doing these things. They challenge and stretch my abilities. I first chose to go with a light yellow and a dark green color and started looking for fabrics that read as "yellow" and "green". Look at what I ended up with!
First Build a Bundle
How in the world did this happen??? I think it turned out to be lovely. I also think it would make for a cute quilt.

Aurifl Designer Collection

Lilly's Quilts announced an Aurifil Make-A Designer-Collection competition. Just follow her instructions at the link. It is easy peasy! You can enter as many times you want; but, I'm only entering once because designing bundles or designer collections are very time consuming. The deadline seems to be April 17 as the winners will be chosen April 18. By the way, the contest is actually held in a Flickr Group. I am also blogging my choices here for posterity's sake in addition to passing on the word about this competition where you could win your own designer collection.

Here is my designer collection. I went with "neutrals" because that is what I use the most.

This is a cotton 50wt collection. The color codes are, from left to right, top to bottom:

2360, 4012, 2320, 2315
2026, 2000, 2021, 2024

Monky Do: Fabric Bundle Contest

I am just popping on briefly to participate in a challenge. Katy of Monkey Do is having a contest where you design your own bundle using twelve fabrics from Pink Castle Fabrics. I would have to say this challenge was a little easier than the first one I ever did.

I am calling this "Feeling Punchy" because that is exactly how I felt when I created this bundle.

1. Far Far Away III: Guitars in Yellow & Orange
2. Silent Cinema: Front Row Orange
3. 1001 Peeps: Sheherazade in Orange
4. Metro Living: Living Lattice in garnet
5. Far Far Away III: Clothes Line in Yellow
6. Annie's Farm Stand: Big Dots in Yellow
7. Half Moon Modern: Snip Snip in Orange
8. Woodlands: Woodlands Woodgrain in Orange
9. Reunion: Baby's Bunting in Cool Dusk
10. Walk in Woods: Dash Stripe in Cloud
11. Reunion: Daisy's Dates in Graphite
12. Ta Dots: Ta Dots in Ebony

It is tough designing a bundle when you don't know what the fabric looks like. {e.g. colors? scale? etc., & etc.} Nonetheless, I still had fun with this challenge. I hope you liked what you saw.

Blogger's Choice Fat Quarter Bundle

{Note: This post is a Fabric Tuesday post.}

Quokka Quilts is having a fun challenge. Click here for the specific details. Basically, one chooses twelve prints and three solids from the Fat Quarter Shop to create a "Blogger's Choice Fat Quarter Bundle". The deadline for this is January 15th and there is a possibility of winning tons of fabric if you're picked!

Now, I have to tell you that my chances of winning is very slim. I just wanted to have some fun designing a bundle of my own.

I have been into black and white fabrics of late. So, I started out with a favorite print (the first one in the collage below). I then went from there adding a couple fun prints along the way. I have to tell you that this is NOT typical fabrics I would automatically pick out. However, I am loving what I have chosen for the bundle. The bigger challenge would be to make a quilt out of these fabrics. Ha!

Where I'm From (Writing Prompts)

I first encountered this writing assignment when a blogger shared her writing result from an assignment at a blogging convention. The blogger provided a link to the template. Within that link, was another link to a poem by George Ella Lyon, which the template (writing prompts) is based upon. I became intrigued and decided to give it a try.

I wish I had saved the original blogger's link where I first saw this writing assignment to share with you all. But, at the time, I did not know I was going to do participate in this challenge. I have since seen other bloggers share their results. So, this assignment is all over blogging land.

I first wrote using the template. I must say it is a difficult challenge. And, this is the result most people share on their blogs. However, I decided to go further and mimic the poem that the writing prompts is based upon. This required some intensive editing. I then went back and tweaked it a third time and decided to call it done. What you see below is my third and final draft AND I broke a couple rules doing this assignment. Oh well. I am a rebel like that. Ha! Enjoy.

Where I’m from template

I am from tiny batteries and hearing-aids,
from Energizer, Oticon and electricity.
I am from a house on “kissing lane”
with ghosts of sad happy memories.
I am from the Jewelweed,
the family of ‘touch-me-nots,’
an herb and a wildflower,
a jewel among the weeds.

I am from celebrations and unconditional love
from Marjorie, Viola, and Merle Sr.
I am from the penny pinchers
and the borderline hoarders,
from contracting Rubella and turning anger into laughter.
I am from Protestantism and Catholicism –
Believers in the One
who saves by Grace.

I am from flying seven flags and the Maine-iacs,
Lobster rolls and Pizzas.
From fanatical Cribbage players,
the writers,
and sentimental old fools.

I am from fragments of faded old pictures
and worn home movies in all their glory,
wondering and pondering
upon their stories,
wishing to know more with longing
for they are my history.

Pictorial Monday: Self Portraits

There is a site called Digital Photography School that I follow (via RSS feed) and, in general, it has been very helpful. I like the challenges they present once in a while; but, I rarely participate. Well, sometime last week this post popped up in my RSS feed and intrigued me. I decided to go for it as I thought it would be fun.

Let me tell you, the creativity aspect is tough not to mention attempting to take a self portrait is even tougher. My lack of knowledge did not stop me - I was determined to plow through in spite of myself and learn. I learned more about lighting in these exercises. I also learned about aperture and depth of field.

Dan was my willing assistant. He sat or stood while I focused on him to make sure I would be in focus in the picture. He explained (or attempted to explain) concepts to me. He deserves a lot of credit for the pictures below because without him, I do not think these would have been as good as they are.

Below are the pictures that I came up with for the three different challenges that were presented. I have to say that I do not like myself in pictures – I am not photogenic unless I am laughing. At least, I feel that way. Dan feels otherwise; but, love is forever blind. These pictures were all taken this past weekend.

Self Portrait Challenge #1: Props

Living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl

Material Girl written by Peter Brown and Robert Ran
sung by Madonna
I had originally thought about laying among a bunch of fabric; but, that would have been too tough to implement as I do not have a remote switch nor would I have been able to set the camera high enough to get a picture of me wallowing among fabric. At least, it would not have been easy or safe to attempt this scenario.

The above shot was thought of by Dan as I was talking to him while sitting behind the sewing machine. I liked the idea well enough that we set it into motion by piling the fabric around the sewing machine. It took many attempts on my part to finally get the lighting right. The above shot is the one we both liked. So, I picked it to use in the challenge.

Self Portrait Challenge #2: Light

Instead of cursing the darkness,
Light a candle for where we're going,
There's something ahead, worth looking for.

When the light of time is on us,
We will see our moment come,
And the living soul inside will carry on.

Light a candle in the darkness,
So others might see ahead,
Light a candle in the darkness, when you go.

Light a Candle by Neil Young
When I received the #2 challenge in the RSS feed, I immediately knew I wanted to do something with candles. I love candles of all kinds and am addicted to the Yankee Candle brand. However, the candles I used here were cheap ones I had purchased specifically for this challenge from Walmart. I envisioned using dark candles so that only the candlelight would be evident and this one came out very well.

I had a problem with lighting and shadows. I ended up with one candle sitting just outside the right of this picture on a chair. Dan held another candle on the left and I finally had an acceptable shot.

Self Portrait Challenge #3: Mood

My soul is weak
My heart is numb
I cannot see
But still my hope is found in You
I’ll hold on tightly
You will never let me go

Clinging to the Cross by Tim Huges
This was the toughest challenge. It is extremely hard to convey a mood through the camera. I had a hard time imagining something that conveys a particular mood of any kind through the camera. My mind was working really hard and then I thought of something that might be doable. I had envisioned a cross in the background blurred with me a distance a ways to convey the feeling of "lost" which I sometimes feel due to depression. At the same time, I am holding onto the Bible to convey that I am clinging to my faith. I also felt that a black and white photo would be best in this situation.

I had to make the cross that you see in the background. I made that prop almost entirely by myself with the guidance of Dan (who is into woodworking). I even used power tools - a duel-beveled, sliding compound miter saw and a router - and did not hurt nor kill myself in the process. Also, this did not cost anything as I used scraps.

It took a better part of a day to finish the prop as priming and painting takes time not to mention allowing time for the wood glue to dry before painting. I'm quite pleased with end result. It just needs one more coat of paint, which I will give it someday. I'm planning to keep this prop. After all, It is my very first woodworking project that I have completed from start to finish.

This time, Dan helped me immensely because I had an idea and every shot I took just wasn’t cutting it. He finally understood what I was going for and helped me in the process.

A lot of credit goes to Dan for this photo because he put his 50mm lens on my camera and explained some details to me. I took one shot at f/4.5 and it wasn’t what I was going for. I took another shot at f/1.8 and the shot was very close! Dan had taken the time to explain to me that the bigger the aperture, the smaller the depth of field. I wanted to understand the why of it all. He smiled and said that he did too - this is just one of those things you have to accept. Ugh. However, I see that it is true. It works. So, it is just one of those things I am just going to remember and accept.

I hope you enjoyed reading this long winded post and viewing the pictures. Note: all the lyrical quotes I added were an afterthought - not the basis for the pictures themselves.

UFO Challenge: January

{Note: This post is for both the usual Monday's pictures and Tuesday's crafts post. I will resume regular programming next week.   :-}

In the beginning of January, Patchwork Times drew the Number 6. And, the number 6 was assigned to "Scrap Upchuck". {You can see my original post to see what number was assigned to what UFO.}

Before

I don't know why I separated the fabric squares into light, mediums and darks. Habit I guess. I didn't really need to do that. did I?. And, there was an extra smaller box full of fabrics that I also used which was not pictured.

Anyway, I started on committing random acts of violence against fabrics. Ha! I cut up a bunch of 2.5" squares -- 1,375 scraps, 204 "darks" and 134 "lights". The original Scrap Upchuck quilt used solid black and blues. I didn't want to purchase any more fabric as I wanted to use up the stash that I had set aside eons ago to sell or giveaway. And besides, I'm not a solid fan. I rather use tone-on-tone fabrics or fabrics that "read" as solids. So, I am attempting to use "dark" fabrics and "light" fabrics from the stash.

After

I thought it was going to take me forever to cut a kajillion little squares. But, it actually went rather quickly. I had shoved my hand inside the boxes of stash and randomly drew out fabrics. I even drew out a bag that was labeled as stash fabrics! It contained nine quarter yard cuts of Nancy Crow's fabrics -- ancient and perfect! Ha!

I finished cutting all the required squares needed and the UFO challenge on January 21st. I was absolutely thrilled.

Since, the month was not quite over, I decided to slap some squares on my design wall. I'm doing things backwards. There are two different blocks for this quilt: A & B. I am suppose to start making Block As first. However, I am starting with and making block Bs. That is me. Crazy. But hey, I'm the one making this thing. I can do it in any order I please, correct? Ha!

Here is what I have on the design wall. Oh boy. They are not very pretty or good looking, Are they? Oh well. That is why it is called 'scrap upchuck'! Ha! All I need to do is start sewing the squares together to make the blocks. This is only four 'B' blocks. I need to make a total of seventeen of them. Auuggghh! Ha!

Anyway, the UFO challenge for January (cutting all the fabric squares) is completed. Hurray!

UFO (UnFinished Objects) Challenge

Patchwork Times is having a UFO challenge for 2011. {UFO = Unfinished Objects} She will draw numbers at the beginning of each month. Whatever number is assigned to a UFO, that is what we will work on for that month.

I have three UFOs (Unfinished Objects) that need to be completed. They are:

  1. Dan’s Quilt

I started this in 1994 or 1995. It is all basted and ready to be quilted. This is actually one of the first I made. I made this while taking my first and only class with the specific purpose to learn how to hand quilt. I just never could decide on how I wanted to quilt it. Well, no more indecision. I’m just going to do it. He’s waited long enough for that thing to be finished.

I need to: a) Hand quilt and b) Bind it.

  2. Wild Quilt for Single Sofa Bed

Most of the fabric is cut up; but, they are stored in boxes which are in the guest closet and I can’t get to them at the moment. Ha! I had to stop working on this when I returned to college to finish up my degree which was way back in 2005. I never picked it up again.

I need to: a) Finish Cutting up the fabrics, b) Sew up the blocks and c) Quilt (machine) and Bind

  3. Scrap Upchuck

I started this several months ago; but, I put it on hold in favor of finishing up My Mother’s quilt which had priority for Christmas and participating in a Layer Cake quilt along.

I need to: a) Finish Cutting up the fabrics (this will take a lot of time as I need A LOT more 2.5” squares from the “scraps”), b) Sew up blocks and c) Quilt and Bind it.
Since Dan’s quilt will be hand quilted, that one will take more time than the others to get finished. However, the other UFOs need the remaining fabric cut and the blocks sewn together. So, I’m giving Dan’s quilt equal “time” as the other two UFOs.

Since there are 12 months, I’ve assigned each UFO four numbers.

Dan’s Quilt: 1, 4, 7, 10
Wild Quilt: 2, 5, 8, 11
Scrap Upchuck: 3, 6, 9, 12

Whatever number is drawn for the month, that will be the project I work on. Hopefully, I’ll get these UFOs finished someday. I have a feeling that the Wild Quilt will be done sooner as it’s a smaller quilt than I usually make and if my memory serves me correctly, cutting up the fabric is almost done. If I do get that quilt done sooner, that will be okay – it will leave the remaining assigned numbers (months) blank giving me more opportunity to create new UFOs in the year 2011. Ha!

Actually, I hope I will not create any more UFOs. I do have a few more UFOs that were part of swaps I participated in eons ago; but, I never sewed them up or whatnot. And, to be honest, I do not have the inclination to do them. So, I left them off the list.

One last note: if we find a house to call our own, these UFO dreams will have to be put on hold.

One Thing Challege, One Week

I don't have anything new to share crafty-wise. How pathetic is that?!?

Amy's Creative Side
So, the one thing I want to complete this week is to at least finish cutting the coordinating fabric for my mother’s Maxine quilt. And, at the very least, have the blocks arranged if not sewn together.

As soon as I hit publish, I'm off to do that very thing. :-)

Saturday, March 13, 2010

I issued a photo challenge to Dan that is related to my weekend getaway – take pictures of the sharks’ teeth I’ve found and saved throughout the years. I had to tell him where to find them – they are in a pill bottle that I stored in one of the mini Lang cedar chests (along with other small mementos) I collect which is inside the safe in the office.

He asked what it was exactly that I wanted. I wasn’t really sure what I wanted and ultimately gave him the creativity since he was the “photographer”.

Aren’t these amazing? These are not the original pictures since I had to resize them for posting on this blog; but still, it gives you an idea of how gorgeous the pictures turned out. I had totally forgotten about the necklace I made with the help of my brothers. I absolutely love these pictures!
